Andy’s birthday wish list

August 1st, 2008

I just asked Andy what he wanted for his birthday.  His response, “a trampoline, a submarine and lima beans.”

Growing up too fast

July 5th, 2008

This morning Andy and I were having our wake up cuddle.  He was laying there and my arm was draped over him.  He started playing with my arm.  He’d lift it up with his hands and let it drop, or hold it up with his hands and feet and let it wobble as it threatened to fall.  I flashed back to when he was an infant and playing with his feet was much more frequent.  I’m reveling in the nostalgic and the glimpse of baby still left in my preschooler when he says, “Mama, you’re so cumbersome.”  They grow up in they blink of an eye.

Word World

July 3rd, 2008

So my kids have started watching  “word world” on pbs.  It is a show where the things are made up of the letters that make them.  A pig made of P-I-G.  In the show, if someone needs something, they can make it by building the word – putting T-E-N-T together will create a tent.  They spend a lot of time sounding out words to build and even do some rearranging of letters.  This morning Andy decided he wanted a ladder.  He gathered the frig magnet letters, sat down with them and started putting them together muttering “haa,” “pah” “ladder” – like he was sounding it out.  Then “hum, that didn’t work.  Maybe they’re in the wrong order.”  It is so much fun.

Verbal Blenders

June 15th, 2008

Any little kid will say cute (confused) things as their language skills evolve and their vocabulary grows, but when you have a smarter and more verbal little kid, it adds a whole different dimension.  For example, Andy will tell you the dot at the end of the sentence, it is a “pyramid.”  And after being sick for a week, he asks me, “how are your sick-doms?”

Spreading the irony

June 6th, 2008

How come it is that little kids have such a hard time spreading their peanut butter and jelly on their bread, but they have no trouble spreading it on their face, hands, arms, belly, legs, chair, table, the floor even?

Historic moment in Davy’s smile

May 5th, 2008

Davy lost his first tooth this weekend.  It has been loose for a couple months.  We were at his soccer game and it was half time and they were eating grapes and he brings it over to me.  It was exciting.  It also serves to remind me how fast they are growing up.  There are fewer and fewer firsts.

It also makes me feel like such a mom.  We are at the soccer game.  His tooth falls out.  Afterwards I pack up the kids in the mini van and that night I get to play tooth fairy.  Dreams do come ture.

Reflective Reading

February 22nd, 2008

When Davy was still a toddler I put up labels for most rooms in the house.  Today Davy comes to me and says, “Today I learned something.”  When I asked him what he learned he said, “When you look in the mirror the signs says ‘room bath,’ but when you look at the sign it says ‘bathroom.’”

No secrets from mama

February 9th, 2008

Davy says to me, “There’s a party for you and it’s a surprise so don’t tell yourself.”

More spelling adventures

February 4th, 2008

This morning Davy tells me he can spell ‘ball.’  B-A-L-L.  Yeah, so I ask him how to spell ‘wall.’  And we have a discussion about rhyming words and same ending sound but ‘wall’ begins with a ‘www’ sound.  He figures it out.  W-A-L-L.  Then spell ‘tall.’  He responds, T-A-L-L.  Then ‘fall.’  He responds, F-A-L-L.  Then ‘small.’  He responds, S-A-L-L.  Well, almost.  Then I ask him to spell ‘all.’  He responds, A-A-L-L.  I guess he’s got the idea anyway.

How confusing the English Language

January 22nd, 2008

Last night Davy and I had a bedtime conversation.

“How do you spell C?” he asked.

You spell c/see with an ‘s’.

You spell y/why with a ‘w’.

You spell u/you with a ‘y’.

And daddy mentions you spell w with a ‘d’.

Tonight Davy was looking at the calendar at bedtime and deduced how to spell ‘tue’

You spell ‘going to the store’ T-O.

You spell “I’m going too” T-O-O.

You spell “I’m two years old” T-W-O.

How do you spell “In two days I’m going to the store too.”
